Psalm 92

“It is good to give thanks to the LORD… For you have made me glad by your work”

When we’re young our mothers teach us to be polite. How we should say “Please” and “Thank you”. This is not like that. It is not “good” to give thanks to God because it is what our mother’s would want us to do (though they may). It is good in the sense of relief and rightness. Like an eruption.

Giving thanks to God is a volcanic response of joy. It is volcanic in that it is overpowering and organic. Delighting in God is what we are made to do, and every suppression of that robs us of joy and purpose. Be it fear, pride, laziness, apathy, or a thousand other barriers to thanksgiving, a true recognition of the work of God on our behalf opens the chambers of life within us. And we gush.

At first it may be a stream of quiet steam rising to the skies. An indication of the interaction between the dark things and the consuming fire deep within. And while it starts small, it inevitably grows until the cracks form in my rocky exterior. The dead mountain is transformed into a living thing, characterized no longer by its still, gray existence, but now by its fiery, liquid activity.

And when that lava life flows, it blazes an unstoppable path before us and leaves an unmistakable one behind us.
